Mese

The magnificent central (mese means "middle") boulevard of Constantinople (q.v.), running through the center of the city, lined on each side with porticoes. It began at the Milion, the milestone from which all distances in the empire were measured, situated in front of Hagia Sophia (q.v.). It traversed the major forums of the capital, including the Forum of Constantine and the Forum of Theodosios (I). Just past the Forum of Theodosios, the mese forked into two main branches. One branch continued on in the same direction to the Gate of Pege, while the other turned southwest to the Golden Gate. When the emperor returned from campaign, his adventus (q.v.) began at the Golden Gate and traversed the mese.
